Veteran’s Day in a Civil War Cemetery

by William Cullen, Jr.

At dawn among the long shadows
I walk the ranks and rows
forever locked in their formations.
Any ode to Union dead would seem
out of place in these uncivil times
for what they died for still remains
under bright grass and for us to find.
