In Check

by Peter Jastermsky

This morning I am one step away from getting slammed by a car making a right turn on a walk signal. I am somehow able to hold my body’s forward motion in check while the car passes by me.

Next to me, a jogger has already left the curb. He has to execute an awkward dance to avoid getting hit in the side.

I am able to cross the street—but barely. My bus is on time.

Today, Gratitude rides with me.

so full
it grows a new chamber
